On September 26th, 2022, both the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines began leaking gas after seismographs detected underwater explosions. Both Danish and Swedish authorities suggest that leaks are a result of sabotage, not accident. Given that no one has taken responsiblity for this attack, it seems like a perfect time for me to test my geopolitical accumen by registering a prediction.

The Background
Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 were both constructed to carry natural gas from Russia to Germany. While the Nord Stream 2 was completed in September 2021, it's certification was delayed and ultimately suspended by Germany in the lead up to as a sanction on Russia in the lead up to the Russo-Ukrainian War. Nord Stream 1, on the other hand, had been shut off by Russia since August. While Russia cited maintenance requirements as the reason for the stoppage, many suspected that the move was in fact retaliation for European sanctions on Russia.
So, to theorize who might be responsible for sabotaging these pipelines, I ask "Cui bono?" (or "who benefits", for those who didn't study Latin as part of their home schooling). In this situation, I believe it is the United States of America who most plausibly has both the means and the motives to carry out this attack.
The Motive
U.S. Presidents dating back to George W. Bush have opposed both the Nord Stream pipelines on the grounds that the pipeliness would increase Europe's energy dependency on Russia. In January of this year, Under Secretary Victoria Nuland stated the following:
“If Russia invades Ukraine, one way or another, Nord Stream 2 will not move forward.”
Next month, President Biden had the following exchange with a reporter:
Pres. Biden: "If Russia invades...then there will be no longer a Nord Stream 2. We will bring an end to it."
Reporter: "But how will you do that, exactly, since...the project is in Germany's control?"
Biden: "I promise you, we will be able to do that."
With rising energy prices in Europe and winter fast approaching, it seems likely that Germany would be facing rising pressure to relax the sanctions on Russia in order to increase the energy supply, lowering the prices. On the other hand, if reopening the pipelines is taken off the table as a political action, it reduces any pressure on Germany and the European governments to play nice with Russia.
Both Russia and Germany have the capability to directly shut down the pipeline without having to resort to a crude measure like underwater explosions.
The Means
The leaks occurred off the coast of Bornholm, a Danish island on the opposite end of the Baltic Sea from Russia. In June, an article in Sea Power Magazine described the use of "Unmanned Underwater Vehicles" by the U.S. 6th Fleet as part of BALTOPS 22, the "premier Baltic Sea maritime exercise", which occurred in the Western end of the Baltic sea. While it makes better PR to brag about explosive detection and removal, I have no doubt that the U.S. has the same or greater capability to place underwater explosives. In addition, U.S. ships and aircraft are known to have been in the vicinity of the leaks earlier this month.
Conclusion
So there you have it. That's my prediction registered, I believe the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines were most likely United States foreign policy in action. I look forward to hearing any feedback.
